Mini League Records

The full and updated list of Mini League track and field records can be seen here (PDF) and it makes very interesting reading and inspiration for those athletes eager to get their name in the record books. Records began in 2001 following the first full Mini League season. Fortunately there are not too many records still standing from those early years and it hopefully shows that standards within Derbyshire are still on the rise. Amongst the record holders are several English Schools medallists, past, present (and hopefully future). One addition this year is that of Guest Records. To set a Mini League record an athlete must be a member of a Derbyshire club. Charnwood AC this year are welcome guests, and this new list acknowledges any outstanding performances.
There is, however, one uncertain record. The U13 boys 200m currently states Thomas Morgan as the holder from 2008 with 26.5. We have a further entry of 26.4 (probably from the 2009 season) but we don't know who the athlete is! Did you or some one you know or coach set this time in a Mini League match? If you can shead any light on this please contact Julie Feeney feeney@mailbox60.freeserve.co.uk

Mini League Results

A total of 7 new records were set at the third match in the Derbyshire Mini League track and field series on 24th July. The Moorways track looked resplendant for this match as always, and there was an above average gathering of eager athletes and supportive parents and coaches. Mini League is now in its 10th full year and it remains an important fixture for young local athletes. Chesterfield came first overall again with 501 points and look set to take the Mini League trophy this year barring any upsets at the final match. Amber Valley were runners up again with 467.5 points, Derby AC 3rd 447.5, Buxton and Blackwell 4th 84.5 and 2DASH 5th 34.
The middle distance records in particular took a battering with four new records being set. Chesterfields Campbell Menzies took two seconds off the existing U15 boys 800m with a fine run. Jethro McGraw (Amber Valley) competing in the U13 age group took a further three seconds off the 800m record he already holds, to record one of the fastest times in the country so far this year. Not to be outdone sister Tamsin ran her fastest time of the season to set a new U11 girl 600m record and during the same mixed race Chesterfields Merlin Ferinho streaked ahead of the rest of the field to set a new record in the boys event. Until Saturday Emily Johns (Derby) shared the U15 girls high jump record at 1.55m with three other girls. Her jump of 1.61 well and truly erased those previous names to claim the record in her own right. Derbys Jordan Thompson took point three of a second of the existing U13 boys 75mH record. Ben Jones (Derby) also broke the existing U15 boys 200m record by point three. Chesterfields Sarah Sanders equalled the U15 girls 100m record. Well done to all.
The final match this season is on Saturday 14th August at Moorways. The league trophy and Athlete of the Match awards will be made as soon after the last race as possible. Selections for the Derbyshire U13 and U15 team for the annual Young Athletes Inter Counties match on 11th september at Saffron Lane, Leicester will be made in the following week. Successful athletes will be notified by a representative from their club as soon as possible.

Derbyshire Pole Vaulter selected to compete for Team GB at the Youth Olympic Games

Derbyshire pole vaulter Katie Byres (Sale Harriers Manchester) has been selected to compete for Team GB at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore next month.

16-year-old Katie, from Glossop, is one of 40 young athletes from 16 Olympic sports to be selected by the British Olympic Association.

The Youth Olympic Games will take place in Singapore from August 14 to 26. All 26 sports on the summer Olympic programme are included and some 3,600 athletes, aged 14-18, from more than 200 nations will take part.

Katie has this year been supported by the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund, and is the 2010 EA U20 Pole Vault Champion, England Athletics all time UK U17 record holder and winner of U18 French Elite Tour 2010 and just this last weekend won silver in the Senior England Championships in Gateshead.

The British contingent will also include diving champion Tom Daley, who was Team GB’s youngest competitor at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Victoria Ohuruogu, the 400m England Indoor Under-20 Champion and younger
sister of current Olympic 400m Champion Christine.

For more details about the event and a full list of athletes selected for Team GB go to www.olympics.org.uk/youthgames.aspx (opens in a new window).

The International Olympic Committee hopes the Youth Olympic Games will inspire young people around the world to participate in sport and to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.

The Youth Olympic Games will provide a balance between sport, education and culture. In addition to participating in their sport competitions, athletes will also take part in a Culture and Education Programme which includes 50 activities focused on five themes: Olympism, Skills Development, Well-being and Healthy Lifestyle, Social Responsibility and Expression.
Derbyshire AA offers its congratulations to Katie, her coach and to her proud parents.

Pride Park Relays

Please note that the 2010 Pride Park Relays due to be run on Monday 26th July have been cancelled.
In spite of requests from the Derbyshire AA no club or individual has offered to take on the responsibility of organising the event on behalf of Derbyshire AA.
The Association regrets this decision and there will be an attempt to resurrect the race for 2011.
Barry Parker (Pride Park Relay Race Director)

Northern Inter-Counties

It is with reluctance that the Derbys AA has decided not to support the Northern Athletics Inter-Counties in Gateshead on 28th August 2010.
The reasons for this decision are that in 2009 many athletes claimed the meeting was too late in the season (mainly Senior athletes); the date was not ideal because it clashed with the final Bank Holiday before Christmas and families were going away; it was the last full week of the children’s school holidays; the venue was too far away (at Wigan); there is some difficulty in finding Team Managers for 2010.
The county will not be entering any teams but if any individual wishes to compete in this match they may be entered on the understanding that they look after themselves on the day and that there will be no further involvement of the Derbys AA. Anyone wishing to enter please contact Barry Parker at bparker@athletics47.fsnet.co.uk

ROY KISSACK MEMORIAL TROPHY.

Although Lincolnshire based, Roy Kissack spent a lot of his time in Derbyshire as a field official at many club, school and County meetings. Following his untimely death last year, his family endowed a shield to be awarded annually by Derbyshire AA to the 'Official of the Year'. On the second day of the County Champs, and following a citation by Barry Parker, the family presented the trophy to Frank Gorman, in recognition of his thirty year's contribution to athletics as a field official and administrator.(date)
