From Chris Cohen,CBE (former Secretary for Derbys. Schools)

Dear all,I am not sure whether you will already have heard the very sad news that Wilf died on Friday morning, having been in hospital for a few days after a multiple organ failure.
He had been quite ill for some considerable time, and was unable to travel far because he needed dialysis every day, and missed the English Schools last year for the first time in many, many years.
I spoke to him before Christmas and he bemoaned the fact that he couldn't get to the track because he felt so unwell, but hoped to improve.
He also wrote to me just after Christmas and didn't mention how bad things were.
I spoke to Alison, his daughter, during the week and gave her a couple of messages to read to him when she visited in hospital, although he was not conscious at the time, but she and her mum were talking to him all the time.
She mentioned that one message from Geoff Capes had told "the old bugger" to get himself sorted.
Sadly, it wasn't to be.I know I will miss him greatly.
He was my coach as a youngster, and spent time advising and mentoring me when I started teaching and coaching.
He was a great support. He was also a massive support to Derbyshire Schools Athletics, running our coaching course for over thirty years, and only missing one year, when he was working in South Africa preparing their Olympic team for the Atlanta Games.
He brought some famous and top class athletes with him to help on those courses and I know that kids who attended will still have great memories of what he did for them, even if they no longer have any active interest in athletics.
He even insisted on being at Lea Green when he should have been at other places preparing British athletes for major events.
He always felt that was more important, having committed to do so.
On the world stage, he was, of course, one of the best coaches of his day, coaching many Olympic stars, including Peter Elliott, Tessa Sanderson and many others, as well as helping athletes from many countries.
We have lost a great friend and athletics a true giant.I know we will all miss him.
Please pass the message to others who will have known Wilf.
I am sure they will want to know.

Best regards

Chris

Regional U13 / U15 Sportshall

Final preparations for the Derbyshire team competing at Grantham on 31st January are almost complete.
Team managers are Judy Payling (U15G) Julie Feeney (U15B), Alistair Cook (U13G) and Nigel Smith (U13B).
Meet the team in the foyer 11 - 11.15am or in the sportshall when we get access.
The team will be wearing yellow T-shirts.
We have to provide a minimum of two officials to help run the events.
It is hoped that any travelling parents will volunteer to do this, though Derbyshire officials willing to help will be welcomed.
You do not have to be UKA qualified though some experience of sportshall would be useful - ideal for anyone who has recently completed or started on their Level 1 or 2 officials route.
Any offers of help before the day to feeney@mailbox60.freeserve.co.uk

Sad news

Chesterfield & District AC is sad to announce the sudden death of Peter Muddiman, aged 57.
Peter had recently given up as a Level 2 sprints/jumps coach after many years, but had continued as a timekeeper, officiating at many meetings, (including the Sportshall League four days before his death), and as manager of the Club's website.
I'm sure everyone in the Derbyshire Athletics community would wish to send their most sincere condolences to Pete's family at this very sad time.

The funeral has been arranged for this Thursday 10th December at 2.50pm at Chesterfield Crematorium, Brimington Rd, Chesterfield S43 1AU.
We wish to encourage as large an attendance from the club and the wider athletic community as possible..

Quadkids

QuadKids is a new and exciting athletics concept designed to give more children the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the benefits of track & field athletics and also to identify the stars of tomorrow. Specifically designed to be inclusive, competitive, quick, fun and simple to run, QuadKids can operate in both schools and clubs, giving more children the opportunity to experience the core athletics’ disciplines of running, throwing and jumping. QuadKids is a team based quadrathlon competition where each athlete does a sprint, a middle distance run, a long jump and a throw. It is primarily targeted at young athletes from the age of 7-13. It’s easy to run, can take place anywhere and doesn’t require access to an athletics track. It can be run either within a school or club (inter-form festival, sports day, or something different at a training session) or between schools or clubs on a league or championship basis.

England Athletics has selected QuadKids to be part of a national framework for athletics competition in England. From April 2009 QuadKids will be working with England Athletics and the various governing bodies to deliver Athletics based competitions in schools and clubs. 11 Regional Coordinators have been taken on to introduce Quadkids across the country. Derbyshire has its own Quadkids Coordinator. Julie Feeney will be setting up Quadkids school and / or club competition events across the county. Please contact Julie Feeney 07980 346909 julie@quadkids.org to discuss how Quadkids can come to your club or school. 11/4/09
