Quadkids
QuadKids is a new and exciting athletics concept designed to give more children the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the benefits of track & field athletics and also to identify the stars of tomorrow. Specifically designed to be inclusive, competitive, quick, fun and simple to run, QuadKids can operate in both schools and clubs, giving more children the opportunity to experience the core athletics’ disciplines of running, throwing and jumping. QuadKids is a team based quadrathlon competition where each athlete does a sprint, a middle distance run, a long jump and a throw. It is primarily targeted at young athletes from the age of 7-13. It’s easy to run, can take place anywhere and doesn’t require access to an athletics track. It can be run either within a school or club (inter-form festival, sports day, or something different at a training session) or between schools or clubs on a league or championship basis.
England Athletics has selected QuadKids to be part of a national framework for athletics competition in England. From April 2009 QuadKids will be working with England Athletics and the various governing bodies to deliver Athletics based competitions in schools and clubs. 11 Regional Coordinators have been taken on to introduce Quadkids across the country. Derbyshire has its own Quadkids Coordinator. Julie Feeney will be setting up Quadkids school and / or club competition events across the county. Please contact Julie Feeney 07980 346909 julie@quadkids.org to discuss how Quadkids can come to your club or school. 11/4/09

National Sportshall Finals
Derbyshires young athletes turned in one of their best ever performances at the National Sportshall Finals, held at the NEC at the weekend. The team of 36 athletes aged 11 to 15 won their place in the prestigeous Finals earlier in the year, and competed against some of the best young athletes in the country. The team was made up from athletes from Amber Valley AC, Derby AC, Chesterfield DAC and 2DASH, and it is the first time that all four teams, U13 girls and boys, U15 girls and boys have made it through to the Final. A total of 11 individual and relay medals were won, where making a final or winning a medal is a fine achievement given the very high standard as might be expected at a national final.

Clean Sweep for Derbyshire
A small piece of Derbyshire athletics history was created on Sunday 15th February at the Aviva-sponsored Sportshall Athletics East Midlands Regional Final. All four Derbyshire teams, U13 girls, U13 boys, U15 girls and U15 boys, won against county teams from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. Never before have Derbyshire achieved a clean sweep of victories and their winning performances exceded all expectations. All four teams now go through to represent the East Midlands at the prestigious National Finals at the NEC in March where they will compete against the best young athletes in the country.
All athletes, aged 11 to 15 years, were selected for the Derbyshire team from their performances at the county Mini League competitions that have been on-going over the winter months. The Derbyshire squad was made up of 16 Amber Valley AC athletes, 12 from Derby AC, 6 from Chesterfield DAC and 2 from 2DASH.
The U13 girls and boys stamped their authority on the match from the first events. Both the U13 girls and boys teams won their Obstacle relays, and later on the 4 x 1 relays too. In the field many athletes won medals. There was particular success in the Standing Triple Jump with Jay Raradza winning the boys event, Kat Scott winning the girls event with Imogen Cresswell taking bronze. In the Standing Long Jump Sarah Sanders and Kane Jordan did the double winning the girls and the boys event respectively. Katherine Molyneux claimed first in the Vertical High Jump and Adam Nugent third for the boys. Further bronze medals went to Will Stockton and Emily Johns (Shot), and Dominic Hare and Molly Mee (Speed Bounce). On the track Molly claimed her second medal of the day with a controlled piece of time trial running in the gruelling 6 Lap. Dominic emerged victorious in the 4 Lap sprint in an exciting and gutsy race. In the girls 4 Lap Emily Johns dug deep to clinch silver managing to hold off the fast-closing Kat Scott in third place. The 2 Lap sprint finals were eagerly anticipated from a Derbyshire point of view and did not disappoint. Emily Heappey demonstrated a seemingly effortless piece of sprinting to win the girls final and Jay picked up his second gold of the day in fine style much to the delight of the amassed Derbyshire supporters in the spectator balcony.
The U13 girls team won the team event comfortably by 140 points from nearest rivals Notts. Almost every team member won either an individual or relay medal illustrating their strength across all events. The U13 boys also beat the Notts team into second place by over 70 points.
In the U15 age group the athletes contest team, individual and 'all-rounder' titles and Derbyshire athletes figured in all areas. All six lads won at least two medals each. On the track Michael Bosworth secured equal first place in the 4 Lap event with a final agressive push in the last 10m, with Edward Kelly taking bronze. Ryan Newton took silver in the 2 Lap sprint. Michael and Ryan were involved in perhaps the most exciting relay of the day, taking victory in the 8 Lap Paarlauf. Their chosen format of covering the 8 laps between them drew on Ryans sprint speed and Michaels middle distance ability, in a 2-4-2 formation that saw them gradually overhaul a strong Notts pairing. JJ Heath, Tom Bridge, Edward Kelly and Charlie Waterhouse made a strong quartet for the 4 x 2 relay that secured yet another Derbyshire relay victory. In the field Tom Bridge won the Shot Putt with an indoor pb of 13m 52, (a distance, incidentally, which would have won him the England Athletics U15 Championship had he chosen to compete at Birmingham instead) whilst Bosworth took silver. Derbyshire took all three medals in the Standing Triple Jump with JJ Heath leaping 8m 94 for gold, with Kelly in 2nd and Waterhouse in 3rd. Newton took bronze in the Standing Long Jump and Waterhouse won silver in the Speed Bounce. All six Derbyshire lads made the top 10 in the 'all rounder' catagory, with surprise-package Charlie Waterhouse taking joint second place overall with team mate Edward Kelly. Michael Bosworth was one point behind in fourth place, Tom Bridge and Ryan Newton sharing sixth equal and JJ Heath 9th out of 24 competitors. This will surely be a strong team for the National Final.
In the U15 girls catagory Suzie Palmer easily won the all-rounder title, with a win in the 2 Lap, first equal in the Speed bounce and second in Shot. Becky Johnston took gold in the Vertical High Jump and third in the 4 Lap to finish 4th in the all-rounder. Suzie and Becky joined to win the 8 Lap Paarlauf with some aggresive running. There were also medals for Kelly-Jay Payling, bronze in the Shot Putt, and bronze for Eloise Taylor in Vertical High Jump. In the all rounder catagory Kiera Gee and Eloise Taylor finished 8th equal, Jessica Turner 11th equal and Kelly-Jay 17th equal.

Derbyshires Role of Honour
The second annual England Athletics East Midlands Awards Evening, sponsored by Heidsieck & Co Monopole Champagne, attracted more than 250 officials, volunteers, coaches, athletes and friends of the premier Olympic sport to Pride Park Stadium, Derby on 26th September.
European and Commonwealth 400m Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Iwan Thomas treated the 250 guests to an entertaining after dinner speech, and BBC commentator Andrew James guided everyone through the proceedings.
Chesterfield DAC beat off stiff opposition to be awarded with the East Midlands Track and Field Club of the Year in recognition of their fine year in competition, gaining promotion from the Northern League Div 3EC, and retaining their place in the National Junior League Div 1 (as Team CDAV). The club also picked up another honour as Jon Baker was awarded Performance Coach of the Year, recognising his developing successful pole vault group.
Amber Valley's John Davis was rewarded with Podium Coach of the Year, and Belper Harriers' Steve Winfield took the Services to Club Development award. Ernie Cripps was named a joint winner of the Services to Athletics award for his long and dedicated service to Derby AC and the Derbyshire Athletics Association.

Track & Field Club of the Year
In the year that it celebrates its 30th anniversary, Chesterfield & District Athletics Club was selected as England Athletics' 'Track & Field Club of the Year' by the judges at the recent England Athletics National Awards in Solihull.
The club, which had already been selected as the East Midlands winner in the same category, was up against strong competition from the nine other regional winners, but was chosen on the basis of the work done by its athletes, coaches, parents and volunteers. Committee member, David Mourbey, who had written the nomination, was present to receive it at a ceremony which saw 200 people including Olympic athletes gathering to mark the annual awards and inaugural England Athletics Hall of Fame event, and he rubbed shoulders with athletics legends such as David Hemery, Sally Gunnell, Ann Packer and double Olympic medallist Darren Campbell.
The citation noted that, despite a lack of modern training facilities for all but the last six months, the club had had an incredibly successful year, with two promotions gained, three athletes winning international honours, many gaining representative honours and numerous athletes ranked in the top 10 of their events. 27/10/08
